Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
