They're Doing across America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week research forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give him your sweater as well.

The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a kind of radical love concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Finest Within Us

So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most damaging of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
