The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Feedback

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure updated employees about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer vision.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

The news follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to persist observing the development of the game in the time to ahead.

Background of the New Head

The appointee presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 alongside a community playtest. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can look forward to more updates as creation advances.
