The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
