At least 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
